Top 10 of the best Alentejo beaches

After the first three articles of the series of articles about the best Portuguese beaches, I continue south to show you my top 10 of the best Alentejo beaches.

Here are the best Alentejo beaches:

1. Tróia Galé Beach – Grândola

Of the Alentejo beaches, one that you must go to is Tróia Galé beach. With a large extension of sand, Tróia Galé beach is also appreciated for its calm waters and landscape – Serra da Arrábida Nature Park is nearby.

If you’re coming from Setúbal, you must take a boat to get to this beach or you can drive there if you’re coming from the south. If you’re lucky you’ll even see the dolphins in their natural habitat.

2. Comporta Beach – Grândola

Comporta beach is located south of the Tróia Peninsula, in the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve. This beach combines the ideal conditions to attract the most demanding visitor. You’ll find a big parking lot, good infrastructures and a great stretch of sand giving you the opportunity to have a great day.

3. Carvalhal Beach – Grândola

After the modernization of its infrastructures, Carvalhal beach began to attract more visitors. You’ll find a big parking lot, a restaurant bar and you can access the beach through the wooden walkways. The beach is also very popular among surf and kitesurf lovers.

4.Melides Beach – Grândola

Melides beach is considered to be the biggest beach in Portugal. You’ll find many bars and restaurants where you can eat numerous fish dishes while watching the sunset. This beach is also very popular among surfers and thrill-seekers like paragliders.

5. Lagoa de Santo André Beach – Santiago do Cacém

Lagoa de Santo André beach is very popular among families because of its calm waters and among windsurf lovers. This beach has good facilities such as toilet facilities, showers and a restaurant.

6. São Torpes Beach – Sines

Surfers elected São Torpes beach as the best beach to surf in Alentejo region. This beach also has the advantage of having a temperature higher than usual due to the nearby thermoelectric plant .

7. Samoqueira Beach, Porto Côvo – Sines

Samoqueira beach is formed by a small stretch of sand and rocks, creating an almost intimate atmosphere. Not many people go to this beach but it deserves a place in the top 10 of the best Alentejo beaches because of its secluded and natural scenery.

8. Zambujeira do Mar Beach – Odemira

Zambujeira do Mar beach is surrounded by high cliffs where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the ocean. With a rough sea, this beach is perfect for surfers and bodyboarders. Zambujeira do Mar beach is very popular in the summer, specially during the Sudoeste Festival which takes place in the first week of August.

9. Furnas Beach, Vila Nova de Milfontes – Odemira

Furnas beach is located in the Mira river mouth and has a huge extension of sand stretching from the river to the sea. To the north of the beach you can visit the beautiful town of Vila Nova de Milfontes. A restaurant is open in the summer and you can access the beach through the wooden walkways.

10. Almograve Beach – Odemira

Almograve beach, also known as Praia Grande, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Alentejo coastline. The beach is divided into two parts: one is a beach with rocks and cliffs and the other a beach with dunes.

To access the beach, choose from one of the three cliff stairways. There you’ll find a restaurant, restrooms, showers and a parking lot.
