Top 10 of the best beaches in the region of Lisbon

After the first two articles of the series about the best beaches in Portugal, I travelled further south towards the capital’s metropolitan area to share my top 10 of Lisbon beaches – sunbathing is definitely one of the things to do in Lisbon.

Areia Branca beach is the perfect place for those eager for excitement and entertainment. You may enjoy your day by surfing, bodyboarding or learning how to play golf, thanks to the mini-golf course near the beach. You will also find restaurants and bars that will extend your day in this beautiful place.

2. São Julião Beach – Sintra

With a stretch of sand of over 250 metres, São Julião Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the municipality of Sintra. Surrounded by cliffs, this beach is much appreciated by surfers, fishermen and nature lovers. Go up the cliffs to enjoy the view over the beautiful Ericeira.

3. Magoito Beach – Sintra

Magoito beach is known due to the fossil dune located along the ramp that gives access to the beach. Known as the consolidated dune, it is formed by the accumulation of sand generated by the joint action of wind and sea.

This beach has a huge stretch of sand rich in iodine, where various rocks stand out. South of the beach you will see Cape Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe.

4. Adraga Beach – Sintra

Located in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Adraga beach is a favourite destination in the summer, thus hindering parking.

With over 400 metres, this beach stretch of sand is popular among the sunbathers and fishermen. There, you will find a restaurant, public toilets and may visit the caves of Pedra de Alvidrar, a natural gem.

In 2003 Aldraga beach was considered one of the 20 most beautiful beaches in Europe – another one of the Lisbon beaches you should visit

Guincho beach is the biggest in the municipality of Cascais; it’s a windy beach making it ideal to surf, kitesurf and windsurf. The capricious sea may pose a threat to swimmers, mainly due to its currents and winds but, in ideal conditions, Guincho beach is one of the most pleasant in the region.

Along the beach you will find many restaurants, luxury hotels and bars to party all night long. The beach is famous worldwide thanks to the James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, shot in 1969.

Protected by the imposing Serra da Arrábida, Galápos beach is heaven on earth, with a beautiful blue and calm sea and a stretch of golden or very white sand. The crystal clear waters let you gaze at the bottom of the sea, making this beach perfect for a swim and underwater fishing.

10. Figueirinha Beach – Setúbal
