Historic Center is good with lots of restaurants and courtyards. The cable car to the top of the mountain is a must do. It is 7.5 euros return. Residents take a lot of pride in their city. Most of the tourists are Portueguese . Prices are less than in the Algarve. Appears to be great bus service, but everything within walking distance.

Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated.
Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated. It is quite small. It's enough for the Visitors who don't have any specific plans to spend 1 whole day to see all the most important historical sites in this city.

Some locals call it "The Heart of Portugal" because what became the country of Portugal began it's fight for liberation from Moorish Occupation here. The castle from then is still standing and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The old city center is nicely preserved and is very walkable. Regional food is hearty and very tasty. While it is touristy, it is also a university city. Pretty lively with a good range of affordability in eating, staying, and shopping.

Guimaraes was a lovely historical town with a lot to see just walking around - historical churches, lots of restaurants and pretty sites. We went to Citania de Briterios (2,000 year old Celtic village) - a short drive away - and loved it. We could have spent longer here.

I only had two days in Guimarães, and I wish that I could have stayed for at least two more. I stayed in the historic centre, which has much to offer in terms of aimlessly wandering around and staring agog at the old buildings, visiting museums, churches, palaces, and castles, eating delicious food, and enjoying artisan shops. I also took the cable car to Mount Penha and spent a few hours exploring the caves and sites, which was not enough time to see everything. Pack a picnic and plan to spend at least three hours wandering around the top of the mountain, enjoying the breathtaking views of the city, exploring the caves and grottoes, and shining about all the people who have been on this mountain in the past 5000 years.

Guimarães is beautiful and the medieval architecture is...
Guimarães is beautiful and the medieval architecture is amazing, well preserved and comprises most of the town centre, and there's lots of it. The town is very easy to walk around and there are plenty of restaurants and things to look at. For a long stay, there are also supermarkets for self-catering and budget food options.
I didn't like the tourist areas in town that cater for LARGE amounts of people, hundreds of outdoor tables and pricey menus. It can get really really busy and the narrow medieval lanes can get crowded and congested with tour groups who don't notice other people. Travel to Guimarães off peak and you will avoid the heat, the cold and the large crowds. It´s worth it for the history of Guimarães and the stunning buildings.
Extremely well located Bnb with a fantastic breakfast and friendly staff. This bnb spams across multiple buildings in the same lovely street, with one of them having tables you can request to use as a temporary desk to do some work. You are also located very close to the main Guimarães attractions and eateries, and on top of a local restaurant that's an institution to the city! Make sure you have some snacks and beer / wine from the Tasca do Tio Júlio, and soak in the breeze as you eat by this great quiet street.
The building is a gorgeous piece of history in every detail. The gardens are stunning and have many wonderful nooks to explore. There is a lovely view over the valley from the gardens. Breakfast or a glass of wine on the terrace -- both great. Breakfast was delicious and comprehensive! The resident dog, Guri, is so companionable and welcoming, the consummate host. The staff were continually cheerful, gracious and helpful. The property is an easy hop into Guimaraes and other areas of the Minho.
Amazing place in heart of Guimaraes. Located in the historical building the whole place had unique feeling. Rooms were just amazing. Very nice and stylish decor and comfortable beds. Nice garden where you can sit, relax and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Breakfast was also delicious. Staff was also very welcoming, helpful and going extra mile when helped us with booking covid tests needed for our travel. Can only recommend further and hopefully will be able to come back.
Being about a 10 minute walk from the historic district, the hotel was in a relatively quiet and easy area to get to by car. There was ample free parking and we were able to park right in front. The staff was very good at communicating before our visit and were very accommodating. The bed was comfortable. We enjoyed the complimentary glass of vinho verde in the first floor cafe/bar. We enjoyed a beautiful city view from our room and from the cafe/bar.
We stayed here for 4 nights. The apartment is very spacious and was perfect for our 1 year old to explore. Everything was super clean, and it felt like we were staying in a hotel, but with a really well equipped kitchen. We were provided with a cot and fresh sheets for our daughter and our own bed was very comfy. The terrace was a nice addition. Location was also perfect. Would definitely stay here again next time we're in Guimarães.
Everything at Villa Margaridi is like the loveliest dream you'll ever have. José, the host, meets you upon arrival. The facilities are unique and have their own personality and the property stands apart- it is SO BEAUTIFUL here. This was our second stay and it was, if possible, even better than the first. It is the best place to stay in Guimaraes- one of my favorite spots in Portugal.
We were a group of four (2 couples) and we stayed for the weekend. The apartment was very comfortable, spacious and clean. The host Magda was very nice and gave us very nice tips of places to visit, eat and drink in Guimarães. The apartment is not in the old part of town, but it is within 5min of waling distance.
Exceptional location; spacious room very clean.
Great breakfast with outstanding waiters services.
Definitely recommend a stay at this hotel.
The only downside is the room insulation; water running and other noises are present, and loud enough to wake the guests.
Location , the very friendly and smiling staff. At the reception and at breakfast . Even the room service lady said hello and smiled at us! Congrats to them ;) large rooms ! Very clean Parking near hotel and also at the sister hotel next door the Guimarães hotel.
A well done renovation to an old building. The owner also runs a restaurant next door and the food is authentic Guimaraes cuisine. Private
gated parking made leaving to explore the nearby attractions pleasant since I did not have to worry about finding parking.
The hotel was in a wonderful location. staff helpful and courteous. The only issue was there was some type of flying insect that was in our room, particularly the bathroom that made us uncomfortable. The room was spacious and comfortable otherwise.
Very basic breakfast but generous.
Very good location if you travel to Guimaraes by train, close to city centre.
Very friendly staff.
No car park at the Hotel but used the free train station car park just around the corner
Had a very good dinner in the restaurant, the breakfast was fantastic . Great staff that told us about Guimaraes history as well as the hotel. And the hotel was in a very beautiful building with a lot of history.
stunning hotel in a quiet rural location. rooms were fantastic and spacious. Pool was the perfect temperature and the complex was beautiful. the local town is charming and definitely recommend the local Pizzaria.
It is a very nice, newly built hotel close to the university. Excellent for us attending a conference there. Very friendly staff, great breakfast. About 20 minutes walk to the old town of Guimaraes.
Very nice hotel tucked away in a quiet corner but close to everything in this great town. Friendly staff and excellent breakfast served by attentive ladies. Clean and spacious room.
Very comfortable and pleasant. Attractive decor. Would have preferred the usual Portuguese hotel bar with snacks to the fine dining Hool restaurant however.
