Are you preparing a trip to the capital of Northern Portugal and still don’t know what to do? Don’t worry! In this article you’ll find the best day trips and activities in Porto but also in other amazing places you won’t want to miss.
Best activities and day trips in Porto
The first activity I’ve chosen for this article was one I had the pleasure to try and loved it – to shoot a video-souvenir of my stay in Porto.
I’ve tested this activity for you, which was suggested by the company Birdie, managed by Tiago and Ruben.
This is an amazing experience and will make your stay in Porto one to remember! Watch my video-souvenir and decide for yourself:
After a friendly first contact, Tiago and Ruben explained how they would film the video-souvenir, gave me some hints and then we went to some of the streets of Porto to start filming.
To begin with, you should know that you won’t spend too much time with this activity since it won’t last more than 30 minutes, but you’ll have so much fun and love the final result. During this period of time, you’ll be filmed in one of the most emblematic locations of the city – Ribeira do Porto (Porto’s riverfront).
If you’re interested in being the main character of this video-souvenir then wait no more! Book this activity by visiting the website of the company Birdie and choosing the option that suits you the best.
Apart from having a great time, the price is very affordable and starts at 39,90 € for a group between 1 and 4 people.
Small bonus: when paying for this activity at Birdie’s site, you can insert the promotional code “gotoportugal10” so that you get a discount of 10 %.
Another of the best activities and day trips in Porto that I’ve tried and that I strongly recommend is a gastronomic walk tour through the historic centre of Porto. You’ll have the opportunity to get to know the most authentic Porto while enjoying some of the regional delicacies.
Your 3,5-hour walking tour will begin with you tasting a delightful pastel de nata (an egg tart pastry) with cinnamon and the traditional cup of coffee. Then, make your way through the streets of the historic centre until you get to an old grocery where you’ll have the opportunity to savour some regional products like cheese and sausages.
The gastronomic walking tour will have other stops for you to taste amazing products like the wonderful bifana (pork cutlet on bread) and, as you would expect, you’ll also have the opportunity to savour the world-famous port wine.
During this walking tour, you’ll have the company of an experienced guide that will give you more information about the delicacies you’ll savour as well as the places you’ll get to know. All of these reasons make this one of the best activities and day trips in Porto.
In this 3,5-hour tour, you’ll have the opportunity to admire an amazing sunset (depending on the time of the year) from one of the best viewpoints in the city, Serra do Pilar.
However, this experience is much more than a beautiful sunset! While you admire the views over the historic centre of Porto, the guide will tell you more about the history of this city and its most emblematic places.
After that, you’ll go to a small but typical restaurant where you’ll have a wonderful dinner waiting for you. During your meal, you’ll be presented with a beautiful fado show – not to worry since everyone will be quiet to listen to this unique Portuguese music genre. Definitely, an experience you won’t want to miss!
If you want to discover this city at night then this is one of the best ways to do it. Believe me, I’ve tried it already!
Best day trips leaving from Porto
One of the best day trips in Porto and surrounding area you can’t miss is, definitely, a tour to the beautiful Douro Valley where you’ll have the opportunity to discover the first demarcated and recognised region in the world, a region well-known for its famous port wine.
You should know that, throughout this tour, you’ll have the opportunity to better understand the history of this region, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. You’ll go to a viewpoint to enjoy the most wonderful views over Douro river and you’ll visit a typical winery where you can savour different types of wine and olive oil.
Your experience wouldn’t be complete without a 1-hour cruise in Douro river aboard a typical rabelo boat and, this way, you’ll be able to admire the beautiful terrace cultivation from another perspective. This is, definitely, an experience to consider when you visit Porto and surrounding area!
Leaving from the centre of Porto or Gaia, this activity will take you to one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, Aveiro. This city is considered as the “Portuguese Venice” because of its several canals that run through the historic centre.
In this 4-hour tour you’ll have the company of a guide that will show you some of the points of interest in this city and will tell you more about its history, a city that was once dependent on the fishing industry and salt production.
This experience will be one to remember, especially because you’ll have the opportunity to go on a cruise through the canals aboard one of the typical moliceiro boats. These boats were once used to gather moliço, seaweed used as fertiliser. Another highlight in this tour will be a stroll along Costa Nova, a place well-known for its traditional houses painted in colourful horizontal and vertical stripes.
Another of the day trips in Porto and surrounding area that you can take is, definitely, a tour to the only national park in Portugal, Peneda-Gerês National Park. This park is one of the treasures to be found in the country and there are lots of wonders to discover here.
This experience starts in the morning with a pick-up service in your hotel in Porto (or in Braga, if you’re staying there instead) that will then take you to the heart of this national park. There, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy wonderful places like viewpoints with amazing views, beautiful waterfalls and admire the fauna and flora in its purest state.
Apart from these reasons, you should know that you’ll also have the opportunity to visit an authentic village or town where you’ll have a typical Portuguese meal and wine (expenses included in this tour). As you may have noticed, this is a place you must visit!
Would you like to explore the birthplace of the Portuguese nation and one of the oldest cities in Portugal? Then wait no more and book this 9-hour tour that will take you to the beautiful cities of Guimarães and Braga!
You’ll leave Porto towards the beautiful historic centre of Guimarães, listed by UNESCO in 2001 as a World Heritage Site, where you can admire the well-maintained medieval structures of this city, including the beautiful castle and the palace Paço dos Duques de Bragança.
In the afternoon, prepare yourself to get to know one of the oldest Christian cities in the world, Braga. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the historic centre and visit its cathedral. Next and before returning to Porto, you will still have time to visit two beautiful sanctuaries: Sameiro Sanctuary and Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary .
