Do you want to get to know the archipelago of Azores and discover its wonders scattered in islands like São Miguel and Terceira? Then read this article and find out my suggestions for the best activities and tours in Azores so that your stay in the archipelago is one you won’t forget!
Best activities and tours in Azores
My first suggestion is this amazing 3-hour activity. Before beginning this adventure through the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean, you should know that you will be given some important information about cetaceans species like whales and dolphins.
After getting a general idea of what is waiting for your, it is time for you to climb aboard a Zodiac boat and look for the beautiful marine animals. Know that there will be an experienced skipper and crew ready to help whenever you need them to. Among others, you’ll have the unique perspective from marine biologists who will tell you more about the beautiful animals present in these waters.
Apart from enjoying the beauty of whales and dolphins, you will also have the opportunity to admire the beautiful Vila Franca islet, a small volcanic island and a true paradise known by few. For these reason, I consider this as one of the best tours in Azores.
In this 8-hour tour you’ll have the opportunity to get to know some of the most beautiful points of interest in São Miguel island: the unique lagoon Lagoa das Sete Cidades and the amazing lagoon Lagoa do Fogo.
Leaving from Ponta Delgada, take your time and admire the idyllic landscapes and the lush vegetation in this heavenly setting. As I mentioned, one of the stops will be at Lagoa das Sete Cidades, a postcard of Azores archipelago. This place is a caldera divided in two: one of the parts has its waters reflecting the blue of the sky and the other part reflects the green of the surrounding vegetation.
But your tour doesn’t end here – you can also admire places like Lagoa do Fogo, Caldeira Velha natural pools, the historic centre of Ribeira Grande and viewpoints that offer the most amazing views over the island. Apart from the tour itself, you will also have the opportunity to enjoy a typical Azorean lunch.
In this tour with a duration of eight hours, you’ll have the guarantee to visit unique places in all of Europe, making your trip to Azores in general and to São Miguel in particular one you won’t forget!
Leaving from the city of Ponta Delgada, you’ll have the opportunity to discover the eastern part of the island and some of its beautiful locations. The first stop will be at Lagoa where you will visit a traditional pottery shop; after that, you’ll go to Vila Franca do Campo and Vale das Furnas. There, you’ll have the chance to try the local gastronomy, especially “cozido das Furnas” (literally “Furnas stew”), cooked in the heat of the volcanic soil.
Lastly and before ending your tour, you should know that you’ll go to one of the few places in Europe with tea plantations, located in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, in the north of the island. This place has all the necessary conditions to produce tea and exports around 50 tons of tea every year.
In the last tour I have for you in the island of São Miguel, I suggest you go on a 3-hour cruise to admire marine animals like whales and dolphins. Leaving from Ponta Delgada, you’ll sail the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Azorean islands, in search of this unique animals.
After the amazing cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a typical Azorean lunch before you go explore the inland. Needless to say that you’ll be accompanied by a local guide that will show you some of the treasures you can’t miss in São Miguel.
Among other places worth mentioning, I must point out the amazing lagoon Lagoa do Fogo that stands out for several reasons: it is the second biggest lagoon on the island, the lagoon located at the highest altitude and it is a natural reserve since 1974. Apart from the lagoon, you can also visit the Monumento Natural e Regional da Caldeira Velha (Caldeira Velha Regional and Natural Monument), a protected area of major importance for fauna and flora and where you can bathe in 37 ºC waters.
Not only São Miguel island is worth visiting – there is beauty in every island of the archipelago and, with this tour, you can discover the amazing Terceira island. Considered as one of the best tours in Azores, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the island and enjoy the amazing landscapes and much more!
Apart from Angra do Heroísmo and its historic centre listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, you can discover other wonderful places like the unique Algar do Carvão, located inside a dormant volcano and where you can admire beautiful stalactites and an underground lagoon situated 100 metres below surface.
If you only have one day to explore the island, then know that this will be the best way to do it! During this tour, you’ll have the insight from an experienced guide who knows the island and its secrets like few. Wait no more!
