How to access the Internet during your holiday in Portugal

As time goes by, our “need” to access the Internet increases, even during our holiday. I’m going to show you how to access the Internet during your holiday in Portugal without spending a fortune.

Vodafone

Are you going on holiday for a week or less?

My suggestion is to buy a SIM card for tablets or PC. You may use it in your smartphone as well, however, you can’t make a phone call or send an sms like you do with a regular SIM card.

I suggest these two packs:

Go 3 days: for 10€ you’ll get 2 GB that you can use for 3 days.

Go 7 days: for 12.5€ you’ll get 4GB that you can use for 7 days.

Are you going on holiday for 8 to 30 days?

My suggestion is to buy a SIM card for your smartphone. When you buy it, ask the seller the “Vodafone Directo” price plan that lets you make phone calls and send sms for 8,5 cents per minute/sms.

After the purchase, top up your SIM card with the desired value (see prices below) and subscribe an Internet add-on.

Add-on 250 MB : 5.49€ per month

Add-on 500 MB : 7.49€ per month

Add-on 1 GB :  10.49€ per month

Add-on 2 GB : 14.99€ per month

Add-on 5 GB : 20.49€ per month with Spotify Premium

Information : pay a little more than the prices above so that you can make phone calls or send sms.

If you exceed the available MB / GB, you can still use the Internet at a 1,03€ cost per 50MB or you can subscribe another add-on by calling Vodafone or going to a shop.

By the end of the month, don’t forget to unsubscribe the Internet add-on – this way you won’t have to pay the following month. You can do this by calling or going to a Vodafone shop.

MEO

My suggestion is to buy a SIM card for your smartphone. When you buy it, ask the seller the “Start” price plan that lets you make phone calls for 0,155 cts/min and send sms for 0,105 cents.

After the purchase, top up your SIM card with the desired value (see prices below) and subscribe an Internet add-on.

Light 200 MB : 5.49€ per month

Super 500 MB : 7.49€ per month

Super Plus 2 GB : per month

Ultra 6 GB : 20.49€ per month

Ultra Plus 15 GB : 30.99€ per month

Information: pay a little more than the prices above so that you can make phone calls or send sms.

If you exceed the available MB / GB, you can still use the Internet at a 1,50€ cost per 30MB or you can subscribe another add-on by calling MEO or going to a shop.

By the end of the month, don’t forget to unsubscribe the Internet add-on – this way you won’t have to pay the following month. You can do this by calling or going to a MEO shop.

NOS

If you buy a SIM card for your tablet or PC, you may choose one of these price plans:

Pay your Internet access by the hour (each hour costing 1€) or pay for each MB you use – 400 MB for 5€, 1GB for 12,5€.

When you have used up your mobile broadband, you can just recharge the card with the amount you want.

Information: You have 90 days to use the mobile broadband (MB).

If you want to make or receive phone calls, buy a SIM card for smartphones.

When you buy the card, ask the seller the “Livres Base” price plan that lets you make phone calls and send sms for 8,5 cents per minute/sms.

After the purchase, top up your SIM card with the desired value (see prices below) and subscribe an Internet add-on.

Net Mensal 250 MB : 2.99€ per month

Net Mensal 500 MB : 4.99€ per month

Net Mensal 1 GB :  7.99€ per month

Information: pay a little more than the prices above so that you can make phone calls or send sms.

If you exceed the available MB / GB, you can still use the Internet at a 1,25€ cost per 30MB or you can subscribe another add-on by calling NOS or going to a shop.

By the end of the month, don’t forget to unsubscribe the Internet add-on – this way you won’t have to pay the following month. You can do this by calling or going to a NOS shop.

Information: you can buy a 3G/4G pen or a SIM card in Fnac, Worten or directly in one of the phone companies shops (that’s what I suggest). Buying a 3G/4G pen costs around 30€ while buying a SIM card will cost you between 10€ and 15€. The price of the SIM card for tablets / pc includes some hours or MB to access the Internet. When you use up the available broadband you must top up your SIM card in one of the Vodafone, MEO or NOS shops.

What phone company should you choose?

Don’t choose your phone company because of the price, choose the one with the best 3G/4G coverage at the location you are going to stay most of the time during your holiday.

Check here the coverage of each phone company.

If the 3 phone companies offer a 3G/4G coverage in your destination, than I would recommend that:

  • if you’re on holiday for a week or less, buy a SIM card for tablets/PC (Go 7 days – 4GB – 12,5€) at a Vodafone shop .
  • if you’re going on holiday for 8 to 30 days, buy a SIM card for smartphones with the Super Plus 2GB add-on for 12,99€ per month at a MEO shop .
