Portugal has a quite warm and dry weather in some regions. On the other hand, winter is a pleasant time to visit the country. Here, you will find the best time to visit Portugal and some suggestions depending on the season and region.
The Atlantic coast
The Atlantic coast has a relatively calm weather in the low season and temperature, in the summer, is bearable, even in July and August due to its proximity to the sea. However, this region is also susceptible to heavy rains, especially in the autumn and winter.
In my opinion, spring seems to be the best time to visit Portugal – you can enjoy the mild weather with the upside of having few tourists.
Algarve and Alentejo
Alentejo is a very dry region in the summer, especially in July and August.
Paradoxically, the southern region of the country, Algarve, benefits from a Mediterranean climate all year round. You can go there whenever you want. I suggest to visit this region in the low season. Algarve beaches are some of the most crowded beaches in Europe. In the winter, you can still enjoy sunny days, much appreciated in this season.
Countryside regions and North of Portugal
Concerning the centre and north of the country, my advice is to visit this regions in the high season. Temperature is really low in the winter.
Madeira and the Azores
The best time to visit the Portuguese islands is from April to September. Don’t forget that Madeira has a subtropical climate so you may find a very warm weather and heavy rains, particularly in October and November.
Best time to visit Portugal?
Algarve and Alentejo: from March to November.
North and Central Portugal: from May to October.
Lisbon: from April to November.
Madeira and the Azores: from April to September.
